Dana Zinn, with Zinn Dog Training LLC, has been working with and training dogs since 1999. Her many years of dog training experience include working at the spcaLA as an Animal Behavior & Training Specialist. It was the time working with dogs in the shelter that drew her to the sport of K9 Nose Work®; not only for her own dogs but for the many dogs in need of a “job” to do.
Dana was involved in the first publicly offered Nose Work class in Long Beach, CA. She not only participated but eventually assisted in instruction. From there, Dana became involved in the development of the K9 Nose Work® instructor certification program. Dana was one of the first participants to be certified as an instructor for the K9 Nose Work® curriculum approved by the National Association of Canine Scent Work, LLC. She is proud to be a founding faculty member, certifying official, and judge for sanctioned NACSW trials across the country. She is also a Supervising Certifying Official, which means she is involved in the training of new COs for NACSW.
In regard to K9 Nose Work®, her learning never stops as she continues to teach classes, instruct at camps, compete in trials, and conduct workshops and webinars. One of her proudest moments was placing first in the 2014 NACSW National Invitational with Kudos, her Belgian Tervuren.
Dana has participated in a variety of canine activities such as obedience, herding, agility, and of course K9 Nose Work. Dana moved from California with her family to Golden, Colorado in 2008 and brought the sport of K9 Nose Work® with her.
Dana strives to increase her knowledge about canine behavior and instruction. She has attended and helped coordinate many seminars featuring some of the world’s most sought-after speakers. One of her most memorable educational experiences was working with and learning from the renowned dog behavior expert and trainer John Rogerson. She has traveled to England and Washington state to work with and assist him on many courses including his 21-day Instructors’ Course.
Dana is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and was certified as a professional dog trainer in 2005 by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT).
Dana currently shares her life with her wonderful husband Ken, two beautiful children Jessica & Ben, as well as her best learning tools: her canine partners Winnie and Sunny, both Labrador Retrievers.

One of the best advantages we have as a competitor is adjusting to each search and supporting our dog in a competent and non-interfering way. Because most of us aren’t able to compete in trials regularly, we try to perfect these skills in training sessions. The purpose of this workshop is to help the participant make the most of training to prepare for trial in a way that makes the most sense to the dog and reduces the chance of unexpected or never-before-seen behaviors. We will discuss in detail how training often is very different than trialing (whether you realize it or not) and how to have more consistency between the two. As teams move up to Elite and Summit this is imperative!
As we move up in levels, teamwork becomes more and more important. Training is not just about setting hides and problem-solving for the dog. It’s about improving our observation skills, noticing when our dog needs us, and having the tools to support our dogs effectively. This workshop encapsulates recognizing when our dogs are problem-solving, stuck and in need of assistance, or close to solving the puzzle. Become more proactive and productive in the search!
Dana will tailor each exercise to the team’s level and will use her many years of experience observing this game we call nose work to help each individual team improve and become a more cohesive unit. We will have discussions, work dogs, and learn how to review videos to facilitate the most learning.

Join Dana Zinn for a day of a comprehensive study of containers. Through lectures, videos, and live working teams, Dana will cover the many facets of this often-challenging element.
Dana will discuss odor movement, types of containers, setup, and the most important factor – handling.
Dana will coach teams and narrate all that she sees in regard to the dogs’ search style, problem-solving, odor movement, and handler movement.
